The Adelphi baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to help pick up a 5-3 win and advance to the double elimination portion of the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) playoffs. With the win Adelphi improves to 23-15 overall, while Bridgeport finishes their season with a 12-17 record. The Panthers will take on the #2 Concordia at noon on Friday, May sixth at the University of New Haven.
Mike Myers (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Ron Campbell (Shiloh, CT) kept the game scoreless through five innings before Myers ran into trouble. With two out in the top of the sixth Myers Steve Appel (Socorro, NM) and Erik Barber (Mullica Hill, NJ) were hit by Myers and advanced on a passed ball. With runners on second and third Gerry Sanchez (Vineland, NJ) singled, scoring two runs to give Bridgeport a 2-0 lead.
Myers recovered, striking out Steve Anagnostou (Enfield, CT) for the third out. The Panthers answered right back in the bottom of the sixth. Adelphi loaded the bases on a single, double and a walk. Then Frank Alesia (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Robert Calca (Elmont, N.Y.) both walked to tie the game at two. Then Bryan Horrmann (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) singled in two runs to give the Panthers a 4-0 edge.
The Panthers tacked on one more run in the bottom of the seventh to push their lead to 5-2 and brought in Mike Thompson (Bethpage, N.Y.) to shut the door. Thompson pitched 2.1 innings of three hit, one run relief to seal the win and collect his seventh save of the season.
Myers went 6.2 innings, striking out one and allowing just two runs to pick up his sixth win of the year (6-3), Campbell was credited with the loss.
