Garden City, N.Y. - Sophomore Kristina LoCastro belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Adelphi University softball team to a 5-3 win over Merrimack in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader. The Warriors took game one, 3-2, in the tenth inning. Adelphi is now 10-10 on the season and Merrimack is 6-10.

In addition to LoCastro, junior Amy Delmore and senior Theresa Kotulak also homered in the doubleheader.

Merrimack took and early lead in the second inning which they extended to 2-0 in the top of the fifth. Kotulak notched a two-run homer in the sixth, also bringing in junior Beth Fletcher. Neither team would score again sending the game into extra innings. Clarissa Lewis brought in the winning run for the Warriors, 3-2.

Junior Carla Buonviaggio pitched the first seven innings, allowing four hits, two runs, two earned. Sophomore Sheila Feldman (3-2) took the loss, throwing for three innings, allowing three hits and one run.

Adelphi had two runs on six hits with two errors. Merrimack had three runs on seven hits and no errors.

Senior Tonia Trapani collected a RBI in game two off a double in the first inning to bring home freshman Julia Schaper. The Panthers extended their lead to 2-0 on a solo homerun by Delmore. Merrimack got on board in the fifth after reaching on an error and doubling to close to within one. The Warriors then took the lead on a two-run homer by Jacqueline Rubino, 3-2. With two runners on, LoCastro collected the winning runs for Adelphi, 5-3.

Freshman Samantha Tilton (4-1) recorded the win on the mound allowing 10 hits, three runs, three earned, no walks and two strikeouts.

Adelphi had five runs on six hits with two errors. Merrimack had three runs on 10 hits and two errors.

Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, April 10, hosting American International College at 12 noon.
