Dobb's Ferry, N.Y. -
The Adelphi baseball team traveled to Dobb's Ferry, N.Y. this afternoon to take on conference opponent Mercy College. The Panthers scored four runs in the third inning and got a solid six innings from starter Chris Palladino (East Meadow, N.Y.) to come away with a 6-2 conference win. With the win the Panthers improve to 9-11 overall and 4-3 in the NYCAC, while Mercy falls to 2-10 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Mercy took an early lead when Matt McDermott (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) singled, scoring Robert DiToma (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) in the bottom of the first to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. Adelphi responded with a run of it's own in the top of the second, when Ricky Nicholson (Massapequa, N.Y.) singled home Matt DeWitt (North Bellmore, N.Y.).
The Panthers then exploded for four runs in the top of the third to break the game wide open. Adelphi loaded the bases for DeWitt, who knocked a single that cleared the bases, putting the Panthers ahead 4-1. Then Nicholson grounded out to second base but it was hit hard enough to score DeWitt and make the score 5-1.
Mercy got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but Adelphi tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth. Nick Lio (Massapequa, N.Y.) pitched three innings of strong relief and allowed one hit to collect the save, while Palladino picked up the win.
Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, April 7 when they play host to visiting Molloy at 3:30 pm.
