Men's Lacrosse Tripped Up By Molloy, 13-12

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's lacrosse team found themselves trailing #9 Molloy, 4-0 at the half and responded by outscoring the Lions 12-9 in the second half but fell short as Steve Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored with 19 seconds in the game to lift Molloy to a 13-12 win. With the loss the sixth ranked Panthers fall to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while Molloy improves to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the NYCAC.

The Lions Dom Toscano (Plainedge, N.Y.) scored the only goal of the first period off a feed from Patrick Aiello (Massapequa, N.Y.) to give Molloy a 1-0 edge. Molloy scored three more goals in the third period, including on with 45 seconds left in the half. Then Toscano scored his second goal of the game as time expired to send the Lions into halftime with a 4-0 edge.

Adelphi did not waste anytime getting on the board in the third period as Greg Kalberer (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored just 42 seconds in to the action. But Molloy answered back as Toscano scored his third goal of the game. Adelphi scored four of the next five goals to pull to within 6-5 with 2:50 left in the period.

Maier then scored two straight unassisted goals to put Molloy on top 8-5 heading into the fourth period. Adelphi and Molloy played the first six minutes of the fourth period even, with each team scoring three goals. Then James Sampson (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored off of a Mike Zabielski (Baldwin, N.Y.) assist to put Molloy ahead 12-8.

That's when Wes Green (Adelaide, Australia) took over, scoring three of Adelphi's four unanswered goals to pull the Panthers even at 12. But Adelphi could not complete the comeback as Maier scored his fifth goal of the game with 19 seconds left in the game to lift Molloy to a 13-12 win.

Trent Machner (Melrose Park, Australia) collected 11 saves in the loss, while Joseph Labella (Massapequa, N.Y.) picked up 13 saves and the win, which is the first for Molloy over Adelphi in the history of the program.

Green led the Panthers with six goals, while teammate Kalberer scored three goals and added two assists. Freshman Dale Pescitelli (Shoreham, N.Y.) had a game-high three assists and added a goal.

Maier led Molloy with five goals and an assist, while Toscano chipped in three goals and an assist.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 9 when they play host to #3 ranked Mercyhurst at 1:00 pm on Stiles Field.
