Baseball Out Hit Caldwell, 8-7

April 5, 2005

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's baseball team scored eight runs, but gave up six runs in the last three innings, including two in the ninth, before closing the door on Caldwell and claiming a 8-7 win. With the win Adelphi improves to 8-11 overall, while Caldwell falls to 8-11 on the season.

The Panthers blew the game wide-open in the second when Ricky Nicholson (Massapequa, N.Y.) doubled, scoring Tom Sicari (Westbury, N.Y.). Then Ralph Tropiano (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a bomb over the right field wall to score Sicari and give Adelphi a 3-0 edge.

The Panthers would tack on runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh to enter the bottom of the seventh with a 6-1 lead. Caldwell put up three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within 6-4. The Cougars singled in the first run and walked in two more runs.

Adelphi bounced back in the top of the eighth when Henry Daverin (Levittown, N.Y.) doubled in Tropiano and then Doug Anderson (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) doubled in Daverin, making the score 8-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

The Cougars got one run in the bottom of the eighth. Joe Catenacci (Helmetta, NJ) gave up a single to Matt DeWitt (North Bellmore, N.Y.) to open the ninth, but then struck out the next three Adelphi hitters to end the top of the ninth with the score 8-5.

Caldwell opened the bottom of the ninth by drawing two walks and advanced the runners to second and third on a ground out. Mike Thompson (Bethpage, N.Y.) struck out the next Cougar hitter to get the second out. The game looked to be over on a routine grounder but Adelphi second baseman Anderson bobbled the ball allowing the runner to be safe and a run to score, shrinking the Panther lead to 8-6.

With runners on the corners Thompson was called for a balk, advancing both runners, scoring one, making the score 8-7. Thompson managed to get the next Caldwell hitter to fly out to left ending the game.

Mike Myers (Wantagh, N.Y.) pitched 6 and 1/3 strong innings to pick up the win, while Thompson collected his second save of the year. Derek York (Lanoka Harbor, NJ) was charged with the loss.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, April 6 when they travel to Dobbs Ferry, New York to take on Mercy at 3:30 pm.
