April 3, 2005

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - No. 1 ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team were upset by No.3 Stonehill College, 13-5, on Sunday afternoon at Stiles Field. The Chieftains remain perfect at 6-0, while the Panthers suffer their first loss since May 1, 2004, to fall to 6-1.

Although the Panthers held a slight 5-3 draw control advantage, the Chieftains dominated play throughout the first 30 minutes, connecting on seven of 10 shot attempts. Adelphi had seven shots on goal but junior goalie Lauren Stone (Guilderland, N.Y.) was stellar for the Chieftains, collecting five of her 10 saves in the first half. Adelphi found itself in unknown territory, trailing 7-0 at the end of the first half.

Senior Katherine Hock (Mineola, N.Y.) put the Panthers on the board early in the 33rd minute of the second half on a feed from junior Dawn Anselmin (Lynbrook, N.Y.), 7-1. Less than 10 seconds later, junior Erin Acone (Bow, N.H.) raced down the field after collecting the draw control to score unassisted to keep the Panthers at bay. The Chieftains would score two more goals before sophomore Meghan Blume (Bel Air, MD) scored from just outside the crease on an assist from sophomore Diana Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) in the 38th minute, 10-2. Acone again halted an Adelphi run on an assist by junior Jenny McGrath (Milton, Mass.) with 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Lopez connected with Hock in the 41st minute, spurring a 3-0 Panther run, 11-5. This would prove to be the closest Adelphi would get with Stonehill found the back of the net two more times in the final 10 minutes of play.

Acone led all scorers with eight goals and one assist. McGrath had two goals and three assists. Stonehill now leads its all-time series against Adelphi, 3-1.

This was the first time since the 2002 season that Adelphi scored five or less goals in a contest, falling 16-5 against UC-Davis on March 29. The last time the Panthers were held scoreless in the first half was on March 24, 2001, when they lost to Bentley College, 7-1.

Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, April 7, hosting American International at 4:00 pm.
