Panthers Split With Chargers

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team defeated the University of New Haven, 2-0 in game one before falling 3-2 in the nightcap in a conference doubleheader this Friday afternoon. The Panthers are now 25-13 overall and 17-5 in the NYCAC. The Chargers (24-13, 17-5 NYCAC) remain tied with Adelphi for third place in the conference standings.

After a quiet three innings, Adelphi exploded with two runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore Kristina LoCastro doubled to bring home senior Tonia Trapani, who was 2-3 in the game, along with pinch runner Dely Franciso.

Junior Carla Buonviaggio (6-4) was solid on the mound, allowing just three hits, walking one and striking out four.

Adelphi had two runs on five hits with no errors. New Haven had no runs on three hits with one error.

In a reverse of game one, the Chargers took the 2-0 lead in the third inning as freshman Samira Ibrahim and junior Lisa Ramos crossed the plate. LoCastro accounted for the first Adelphi run in the fifth, after reaching on a single and advancing to second and third on sacrifice bunts by seniors Tara Rice and Ivy Klein. She came home on an error by the third baseman. Senior Theresa Kotulak knotted the score at 2-2 on a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth. But UNH rallied in the seventh, picking up the winning run on a single by Ramos.

Sophomore Sheila Feldman (5-5) allowed nine hits with three runs, three earned, walking one and striking out five.

Adelphi had two runs on four hits with no errors. New Haven had three runs on nine hits with four errors.

Before the start of the game, Adelphi honored its graduating seniors, Klein, Kotulak, Rice, Ashley Spreer, Katie Terris and Tonia Trapani. Over the past four years these seniors have compiled a 119-69-1 record for the Panthers including a 2003 NCAA berth and a 2004 ECAC appearance.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 30, traveling to top-seeded C.W. Post. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
