The Adelphi men's baseball team scored seven runs in two innings and out hit Dowling College by the count of 16 to 9 to pick up a 9-7 win. With the win Adelphi improves to 21-15 overall and 12-7 in conference play, while Dowling falls to 17-5 overall and 13-4 in the NYCAC.
Dowling's William Mottram (Haverhill, MA) put the Golden Lions on the board first with a two out home run over the right field wall that put Adelphi in a 2-0 hole. The Panthers got one run back in the bottom of the third when Ricky Nicholson (Massapequa, N.Y.) tripled to center and was driven in by Tom Cali (Shirley, N.Y.).
Anthony Anitra's (West Islip, N.Y.) single to left in the top of the fourth drove in two runs and put Dowling ahead 4-1. Adelphi took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs. The rally was started by a Doug Anderson (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) bunt that scored Nicholson. Frank Alesia (Valley Stream, N.Y.) closed the rally with a two-run single to center, putting Adelphi up 5-4.
The Panthers scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Cali hit a one out triple, followed by an Anderson walk. Brian Rath (Wantagh, N.Y.) smacked a two run double to center then Tom Sicari (Westbury, N.Y.) drove in Rath with a single to make it an 8-4 game.
The Golden Lions pulled as close as 8-7 but Mike Thompson (Bethpage, N.Y.) closed the door to collect his sixth save of the season, while Adam Kipling (Smithtown, N.Y.) picked up his fourth win of the season.
Adelphi returns to action on April 30 when they travel to the University of Bridgeport for an 11:00 am contest.
