The Adelphi men's lacrosse team held fourth ranked NYIT to just three goals over the final three periods of action to come away from Westbury, New York with a 10-9 victory. With the win the eighth ranked Panthers improve to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while NYIT falls to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the NYCAC.
NYIT got on the board first when Joe Gabrysiak (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored off a feed from Chip Schmidt (West Islip, N.Y.). Adelphi's Greg Kalberer (Holbrook, N.Y.) answered with an unassisted goal to knot the game at one with 12:02 to play.
Then NYIT erupted for five unanswered goals to close out the first quarter of play with a 6-1 edge. NYIT held an 11-4 edge in shots and a 15-4 advantage in ground balls after one quarter of action.
The rest of the game was a different story as the Panthers out played NYIT for the next 45 minutes. Adelphi held NYIT scoreless in the second quarter and got goals from Steve Heisler (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Stephen Mortimer (Adelaide, Australia) to pull to within 6-3 at the half.
In the third quarter NYIT managed three goals from three different players, only to be doubled up by Adelphi. Five of the Panthers six goals came from Wes Green (Adelaide, Australia), with Andrew Ashkenazy (Oceanside, N.Y.) adding the sixth goal.
The score was knotted at nine apiece heading into the fourth quarter. Heisler gave the Panthers a 10-9 lead off of an assist from Kalberer with 6:21 to play. Adelphi's defense held NYIT scoreless for the entire fourth quarter to preserve a 10-9 win.
After four quarters of action Adelphi held a 31-29 edge in shots, while NYIT had a 33-20 advantage in ground balls.
Trent Machner (Melrose Park, N.Y.) played all 60 minutes in the cage for Adelphi, making 11 saves in the win. Anthony Letterel (West Islip, N.Y.) collected five saves.
The last time that the Panthers topped NYIT was during their 2001 National Championship season, Adelphi picked up a 14-13 win.
Adelphi returns to action on April 23 when they travel to Syracuse, New York to take on #1 LeMoyne College at 1:00 pm.
