The Adelphi baseball team played host to Queens College in a NYCAC match-up this afternoon. The Panthers and Knights combined for 25 runs on 36 hits over 10 innings, with Adelphi coming out on top with a 13-12 win. With the win Adelphi improves to 12-13 overall and 6-5 in the conference, while Queens falls to 4-11-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the NYCAC.
Queens jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings and looked in control, giving up just four hits in the first three innings. But the Panthers stormed back, scoring 11 runs over the next five innings to knot the game at 12 to end the eighth inning.
Michael Thompson (Bethpage, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless tenth inning, striking out two, to give Adelphi the chance end the game in the bottom of the inning. Robert Calca (Elmont, N.Y.) started the rally with a no out walk. Ricky Nicholson (Massapequa, N.Y.) bunted Calca to second, and then Calca moved to third on the throw to first, which Nicholson beat.
Mike Connors (Babylon, N.Y.) was intentionally walked to load the bases. Tom Cali knocked in the winning run with a single down the left field line to give Adelphi a 13-12 win.
Thompson picked up the win after pitching three innings of relief, Patrick Hogarty (Rosedale, N.Y.) was credited with the loss.
Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, April 14 when they travel to Flushing, New York for a 3:00 pm start.
