The Adelphi baseball team played host to C.W. Post this afternoon in Garden City, New York. The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth but gave up seven runs in two innings, falling 10-3. With the loss Adelphi falls to 11-13 overall and 5-5 in the conference, while the Pioneers improve to 8-9 overall and 4-2 in the NYCAC.
The game was shaping up as a pitchers duel early with Adelphi and C.W. Post combining for three runs through six innings. The Panthers got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Henry Daverin (Levittown, N.Y.) doubled in Ricky Nicholson (Massapequa, N.Y.) to give Adelphi a 1-0 edge.
C.W. Post answered back quickly scoring runs in the top of the fifth and the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. The Pioneers blew the game wide open in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs on four hits to take a 6-1 lead. The Pioneers added three more runs in the top of the eighth on just two hits to take a commanding 9-1 edge.
C.W. Post added a tenth run in the top of the ninth to make the margin 10-1. Adelphi rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring two runs with two outs before Thomas Cali (Shirley, N.Y.) flied out to center to end the game.
Mike Myers (Wantagh, N.Y.) pitched six and a third innings, striking out and giving up four runs to earn the loss. Kevin Gerard (Levittown, N.Y.) picked up the win for the Pioneers.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, April 12 when they play host to Post University at 3:30 pm.
