Softball Tops Bridgeport; 4-3, 12-4

Garden City, N.Y. - Freshman Julia Schaper went 4-8 with a double and a homerun to lead the way for the Panthers as the Adelphi University softball team swept the University of Bridgeport, 4-3 and 12-4 on Thursday afternoon. Adelphi improves to 7-7 overall and 6-2 in the NYCAC. The Purple Knights fall to 5-7 and 0-2 in league play.

Game One
Both teams were scoreless for most of the game before the Purple Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Panthers rallied back scoring four runs in the seventh to take the lead. Three consecutive hits loaded the bases for Adelphi when Schaper singled for two RBI. Senior Tonia Trapani sealed the deal with a basehit along with help from a Bridgeport error to bring in the remaining two runs.

Sophomore Sheila Feldman recorded the win on the mound, striking out eight and walking three with three runs, one earned.

Adelphi had four runs on nine hits with two errors. Bridgeport had three runs on six hits with two errors.

Game Two
Schaper quickly got things under way when she belted solo homerun in the top of the first inning. Senior Ashley Spreer accounted for the second run, bringing in Trapani as the Panthers led 2-0. The Purple Knights roared back, rattling off four runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Unwavered, Adelphi scored 10 unanswered runs over the next four innings to cruise to victory. Junior Amy Delmore, 3-3 with a two-run homerun in the fourth, and sophomore Kristina LoCastro, 1-3 with a two-run homer in the seventh each had a stellar afternoon for the Panthers.

Senior Katie Terris allowed five hits and no runs in the final five innings to record the win, while striking out four and walking two.

Adelphi had 12 runs on 11 hits with four errors. Bridgeport had four runs on nine hits with three errors.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 2, traveling to Sparkill, N.Y. to face St. Thomas Aquinas. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
