Baseball Outlasts Caldwell, 3-2

March 29, 2005

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi baseball was held to just six hits on the afternoon but managed to outlast visiting Caldwell College and claim a 3-2 non-conference win. With the win the Panthers improve to 7-10 overall, while Caldwell falls to 5-8.

Starter Chris Palladino (East Meadow, N.Y.) retired the side in order in each of the first three innings, which allowed the Panthers to jump out to a lead. In the first Ricky Nicholson (Massapequa, N.Y.) started things when he was hit in the lower back, putting him on first. The next batter, Mike Connors (Westbury, N.Y.) cracked a triple that drove in Nicholson, giving Adelphi a 1-0 lead.

The very next batter, Brian Rath (Wantagh, N.Y.) grounded to short, but it was enough to score Connors from third and give Adelphi a 2-0 lead after one. In the bottom of the second Frank Alesia (Valley Stream, N.Y.) reached on an error and advanced to second on a Doug Anderson (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) single. Anderson stole second, which moved Alesia to third, and then Ralph Tropiano (Staten Island, N.Y.) grounded to first, scoring Alesia and giving Adelphi a 3-0 edge.

Caldwell got one back in the top of the fourth and then added another run in the top of the eighth. Mike Thompson (Bethpage, N.Y.) was brought in to stop the bleeding. Thompson intentionally walked a Caldwell batter and then hit the next hitter. But Thompson responded by striking out Fadul Bambino (Astoria, N.Y.) for the second out and Landon Veissy (Bayside, N.Y.) grounded to Rath to end the threat.

Palladino picked up the win, while Thompson collected his first save of the season.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, March 30 when they play host to visiting Pace at 3:30 pm.
