The Adelphi men's lacrosse team faced their first test of the 2005 season on March 19 when they traveled to St. Paul's, Maryland to take on #2 Limestone College. The Panthers played the Saints even for three quarters, entering the final period knotted at 10. But the wheels feel off in the final frame as Limestone outscored Adelphi 9-2 in the fourth quarter to claim a 19-12 win. With the loss Adelphi falls to 1-1 overall, while Limestone improves to 5-0.
Adelphi led 3-2 after the first quarter and extended that lead to 5-3 with 10:52 to play in the first half on a goal by freshman Dale Pescitelli (Shoreham, N.Y.). The Saints answered back with three consecutive goals to take a 6-5 edge heading into the half.
Matt Price (Melbourne, Australia) opened the scoring in the second half, knotting the game at six apiece. But the Saints ripped off three straight goals to take a 9-6 lead with 10:36 to play in the third quarter. The Panthers outscored Limestone 4-1 in the remainder of the third quarter, including getting three goals from Wes Green (Adelaide, Australia), to head into the fourth quarter tied at 10.
The fourth quarter was all Limestone as the Saints outscored Adelphi 9-2. At one point in the fourth the Panthers gave up seven goals without an answer.
Green netted a team-high five goals, while teammate Greg Kalberer (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored two goals and handed out four assists. Trent Machner (Melrose Park, Australia) made 10 saves in goal.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, March 30 when they travel to Southampton, N.Y. for a 3:00 pm face-off with the Colonials.
