Baseball Slips Past Queens, 8-7

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi baseball team was down, 7-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth. The Panthers scored three runs on three hits and three walks to steal an 8-7 conference win from Queens. With the win Adelphi improves to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in the NYCAC.

Adelphi got on the board in the first inning when Brian Rath (Wantagh, N.Y.) doubled home Doug Anderson (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Adelphi matched Queens run for run in the third, fifth and sixth innings to hold onto a one-run, 5-4, edge heading into the seventh.

Queens put three runs on the board in the top of the seventh and held the Panthers scoreless in the bottom of the inning to claim a 7-5 lead. Mike Thompson (Bethpage, N.Y.) held the Knights scoreless in the top of the eighth to give Adelphi a chance to come back.

The Panthers opened the bottom of the eighth with a walk to put a runner on. Anderson singled to advance the runner to second. Rath worked a walk, which loaded the bases for Matt DeWitt (North Bellmore, N.Y.) who also walked, which scored James Conklin (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), cutting the lead to just 7-6.

With the bases loaded Tom Sicari (Westbury, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice that also scored a run to knot the game at seven. Frank Alesia (Valley Stream, N.Y.) singled to third which scored what proved to be the winning run.

Thompson picked up the win for Adelphi, while starter Michael Myers (Wantagh, N.Y.) pitched five good innings, allowing just two earned runs. Anderson went 3-4 on the day with an RBI, while teammate Sicari hit 3-5 with three RBI.

Adelphi returns to action tomorrow when they play host to Concordia College at 12:00 pm in the first game of a double-header.
