The Adelphi University women's lacrosse team opened the 2005 season with a convincing 16-6 victory over host Mercyhurst College this afternoon. The Panthers are 1-0 on the season while the Lakers drop to 1-2.
Senior Katherine Hock (Mineola, N.Y.) scored six of her game-high seven goals in the first half. Sophomore Lauren Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists while sophomore Meghan Blume (Bel Air, Md.) registered two goals and one assist. The Panthers led 10-0 when the Lakers scored their first goal in the 23rd minute. The Panthers held a 12-1 advantage at half-time.
Adelphi shut down its offense somewhat in the second half, taking just 13 shots and scoring four times including one more for Hock. Sophomore Diana Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) collected her two goals in the second half and junior Jessica Marra (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) chipped in one goal.
Sophomore Allyson Murphy (Williston Park, N.Y.) had seven saves in 50:02 minutes in goal. Freshman Grace Monjardo (Rocky Point, N.Y.) saw her first collegiate action, collecting two saves in the final 9:58 of play. Jessica Bunker had 12 saves for Mercyhurst.
The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, March 16, hosting St. Thomas Aquinas at 3:30 p.m.
