After trailing by as much as 15 points, the Adelphi University women's basketball team closed the gap to within two points with 1:07 remaining but were unable to defeat Queens College, falling 89-85. With the loss the Panthers drop to 11-11 overall and 10-9 in the NYCAC.
Senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) led Adelphi with 24 points, followed by junior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) with 21 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Senior Tamarra Richardson (Brockton, Mass.) connected on 5-of-10 from the field for a career-best 12 points.
Both teams traded baskets in the first half, with the Lady Knights holding a 35-31 advantage going into intermission. Queens shot 41.7 percent from the field, compared with 29.5 percent for Adelphi.
Queens quickly opened its lead in the second half, including hitting on four consecutive three-pointers in the six minutes of play. The Lady Knights led 79-61 with 6:15 remaining to play when the Panthers rallied on a 20-4 run. Senior Shonda Holder (Uniondale, N.Y.) hit a jumper with :38 seconds, but Hurdle responded eight seconds later to keep the game to within one basket. The Lady Knights went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in the reamining seconds to hang on for the win.
Holder led all scorers with 29 point along with 13 rebounds. Junior Erin White (Flushing, N.Y.) had 26 points and six rebounds.
Adelphi returns to conference action this Saturday, February 12, traveling to NYIT for a 2:00 p.m. match-up. The Panthers defeated the Bears, 81-71, in their first meeting this season on December 11, 2004.
