Men's Basketball Stumbles Against Queens, 68-55

Garden City, N.Y. - Queens College shot 60 percent in the second half and almost doubled their output from the first half to pull away to a 68-55 win and snap Adelphi's 13 game win streak. With the loss the Panthers fall to 18-4 overall and 17-2 in the conference, while Queens improves to 16-6 on the season and 14-5 in the NYCAC.

Defense ruled the first half and Queens and Adelphi combined for just 10 points in the first six and half minutes of action with the Panthers taking an 8-4 edge with 13:39 to play. The Panthers pulled out to an eight point lead with 12:42 left in the game by using a 12-4 run.

The Knights battled back to take a one point lead with 3:26 to play on a three-pointer by Bradd Wierzbicki (Maspeth, N.Y.). But Adelphi closed the half with a 9-0 run to enter the half up eight, 31-23.

Adelphi opened the second half by pushing their lead to 10 with 17:46 to play on two made free throws by Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.). Queens responded with a 16-4 run to take their first lead of the second half, 41-39 with 11:53 to play.

With the game tied at 43 all with 8:21 remaining the Knights went on a 12-2 tear to take a commanding 55-45 edge. Adelphi would battle back and cut the Knight lead to seven, 56-49 with 2:37 to play but Anthony Mauceri (Queens, N.Y.) put the game out of reach with two made free throws at the 44 second mark.

Junior Eric Martin (Laurelton, N.Y.) led the Panthers with a double-double, dropping in 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. James Samuels (Uniondale, N.Y.) and Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each chipped in 11 points.

Queens back court duo of Hassan Washington (White Plains, N.Y.) and Wierzbicki who scored 19 and 17 points respectively.

Queens shot 55 percent from the field for the game and held the Panthers to just 31 percent shooting in the second half, while outscoring Adelphi 45-24.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, February 12, when they travel to Old Westbury to take on NYIT at 4:00 pm.
