Adelphi Women Stumble At Concordia, 66-63

Feb. 4, 2005

Box Score

Bronxville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team lost to Concordia College, 66-63, on Thursday night at Meyer Athletic Center. The Panthers drop to 10-10 overall and 9-8 in league play.

Three players scored in double figures for the Adelphi led by senior Meranne Whitney (Nashua, N.H.) with a game-high 21 points along with six rebounds. Senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) had 17 points, while junior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Tied at 33 at the end of the first half, the game was close throughout the second half, as both teams traded baskets back and forth. Junior guard Sarah Liebelt (Warrnamboal, Australia) nailed a foul line jump shot with just over a minute left in the game to give Concordia a 64-61 lead. However, the Panthers would respond with a basket by Mangone with 40 seconds to go. The Clippers were able to run the clock down and freshman Cortney Drown (Plattsburgh, NY) sank two free throws with 3.1 seconds to put the Clippers back up by three points.

The Clippers shot 42.1 percent from the field in the second half, compared to 26.2 percent for the Panthers. Poor second-half shooting has plagued the Panthers for most of the season, including each of the last three contests. Concordia also went to the line 19 times in the second half, compared to just eight for Adelphi.

The Clippers were led by junior Pam Karagiorgos (Norwalk, Conn.) with 19 points and six boards. Liebelt pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for Concordia (6-12, 5-11 NYCAC).

This marks the third straight loss for Adelphi which will continue its four-game road stand at Molloy College on Saturday, February 5, at 1:00 p.m.
