The Adelphi men's basketball team held St. Thomas Aquinas to 37 points and out rebounded the Spartans 52-26 to cruise to a 55-37 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 20-4 and 19-2 in the conference, while St. Thomas Aquinas falls to 12-15 overall and 12-9 in the NYCAC.
Adelphi and St. Thomas Aquinas entered into a defense struggle to start the first half. The Spartans took their second lead of the game when Robert Epps (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a free throw to give St. Thomas Aquinas a 5-4 edge with 16:18 to play.
Adelphi responded by holding the Spartans scoreless for the next seven minutes of play, while scoring 11 points to slip out to a 15-6 lead. St. Thomas Aquinas recovered to close the gap to three at the half, 20-17.
The Panthers opened the second half by pushing their advantage to seven with 18:39 to play only to see the Spartans answer with an 8-2 run to pull to within one, 26-25, on a three pointer by Willis Kettrell (Rosedale, N.Y.). St. Thomas Aquinas continued their strong play, taking a 29-27 lead with 13:38 to play.
Samuel Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y.) answered with a lay-up that sparked a 18-0 run that lasted over six minutes and gave the Panthers a 16 point edge, 45-29 with 7:18 to play. From there Adelphi cruised to a 55-37 win.
Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Panthers with 15, all scored in the second half. Jenkins chipped in his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Jamaal Wagner also hit double-digits scoring 10 points and adding seven rebounds.
Epps led all scorers with a game-high 22 points and added five rebounds. Kettrell was the Spartans second highest scorer with seven points.
Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, February 17 when they take on Bridgeport at 7:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
