#19 Adelphi Tops NYIT, 69-55

Old Westbury, N.Y. - Sophomore Samuel Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y.) poured in 14 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lead the Adelphi University men's basketball win to a decisive 69-55 victory over NYIT. The 19th ranked Panthers improve to 19-4 overall and 18-2 in the NYCAC. The Bears drop their fourth straight, falling to 11-11 on the season and 10-9 in the NYCAC.

The first half was played extremely close as both teams shot 50% from the floor, 13-26 for NYIT and 12-24 for Adelphi. The Panthers held a slim 33-31 advantage at the half as sophomore Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted eight points of his 14 points in the half.

NYIT opened the second half on a 10-3 run to build a 41-36 lead with 15:21 left in the game. Sophomore Avery Oliver (Fall River, MA) scored seven points and capped the run with a three point play. After a three pointer from senior Chris Fileti (Valley Stream, NY) gave NYIT a four point lead, Adelphi stepped up it's play, outscoring the Bears 24-4 over the next seven minutes to build a 65-49 lead. Jenkins scored eight straight points for Adelphi, including back-to-back three pointers to start the run.

NYIT was led by junior Avery Oliver (Fall River, Mass.) with 15 points and senior Michael Smith (Kings Park, N.Y.) with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Today's win snaps a seven-game losing streak for the Panthers against the Bears dating back to March 1, 2002. The 66-68 loss was just one of three for the Panthers that season as they went on to make their second straight NCAA Elite Eight appearance. Adelphi is now 30-13 in its all-time series against NYIT.

Adelphi returns to conference action on Tuesday, February 15, hosting St. Thomas Aquinas at 5:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
