Adelphi Women Fall To New Haven, 74-54

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team suffered its worst loss of the season, falling to the University of New Haven, 74-54, on Tuesday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers drop to 10-9 overall and 9-7 in conference play, while the Chargers win their fourth straight, improving to 8-10 on the season and 8-7 in the NYCAC.

Senior Meranne Whitney (Nashua, N.H.) led the Panthers with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. Freshman Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) was the only player in double figures with 12 points.

After a sluggish start, the Chargers opened on a 9-3 run. The Panthers responded on a 8-2 run capped by a layup from Hurdle to knot the game at 11 at 11:23. UNH rattled off the next four unanswered points, but Whitney kept the Panthers in the game, hitting consecutive three-point baskets to eventually tie the game for the third time at 17-17 with 7:03 remaining. Adelphi would never capture the lead as New Haven opened its lead to six, 26-20, at 3:07. Senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) had four of the next eight Adelphi points to close the gap to one, 28-29, with under a minute remaining. The Chargers had the last word, going into the locker room with a 31-28 lead.

UNH stepped up its defense in the second half, while the Panthers shooting suffered connecting on just 9-of-31(29 percent) in the half, including 0-for-10 from beyond the arc. The Chargers quickly opened on a 13-4 run and never looked back. The Panthers trailed by as much as 23 points, 65-42, with 4:19 left in regulation.

The Chargers dominated the boards, outrebounding the Panthers 51-27 on the contest. With 30 offensive rebounds, this translated to 23 second-chance points for New Haven.

New Haven was led by junior Amanda Freeman (Tabernacle, N.J.) with 15 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Tristan Jackson (Media, Pa) contributed 13 points along with a game-high 13 rebounds.

Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, February 3, traveling to Concordia College. Tip off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
