Men's Basketball Stymies Mercy, 64-39

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's basketball team held visiting Mercy College to just eight points in the first half of action, including holding the Flyers to a single field goal and cruised to a 64-39 win. With the win the Panthers improve to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in conference action, while Mercy falls to 2-4 on the season and remains winless in the NYCAC at 0-3.

Adelphi's offense took some time to heat up, but their defense was red hot. The Panthers held Mercy scoreless for the first 11:17 of the contest, building a 15-0 lead before the Flyers got on the board. Even after the Mercy score Adelphi did not back off, forcing 18 turnovers and holding Mercy to just one field goal in the first half, while building a 32-8 halftime edge.

The Flyers chipped away at Adelphi's 26-point bulge in the second half, but could not get any closer then 17. The Panthers lead grew to as much as 30 points with just 1:44 left to play, before Adelphi collected a 66-39 win.

Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, N.Y.) led the Mercy attack with nine points. Dominick Cuzzi (Bronx, N.Y.) and Manny Garcia chipped in eight points apiece.

Ten different players scored for Adelphi, led by Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Dating back to last season, this is the third time in 18 games that the Panthers have held an opponent to under 40 points. St. Thomas Aquinas (2/15/05) and New Haven (2/1/05) were held to 35 and 37 points respectively in Panther wins.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, December 10 when they host Bridgeport at 5:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
