The Adelphi women's basketball team got 20 point performances from two players and erupted for 51 points in the second-half to pick up their third straight conference win, 88-64, over visiting Mercy College. With the win the Panthers improve to 3-4 overall and remain unbeaten in the NYCAC at 3-0, while Mercy is still searching for their first win at 0-7 and 0-3 in the conference.
Adelphi jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead before Mercy settled down and found their rhythm. The Flyers knotted the game at 13 with 12:58 to play on a jumper by Tannyka Bent (Queens, N.Y.). Mercy and Adelphi continued to trade baskets until the Flyers claimed their first lead of the game, 22-21, on a Christine Hafner (Miller Place, N.Y.) with 7:24 left on the clock.
From there Adelphi ripped off a 16-5 run to build a 10 points cushion, 37-27, with just 1:48 left in the half. Mercy got two free throws a piece from Hafner and Kristen Fennessy (Yonkers, N.Y.) to cut the margin to six, 37-31 heading into the locker room.
The Flyers came out of the locker room hot, scoring five unanswered points to pull within on 37-36. Adelphi responded with a 21-4 run over the next 6:45 to take control of the game and build an 18-point lead, 58-40. Mercy would never get any closer then 13 the rest of the way, eventually falling 88-64.
Hafner led the Flyers with a team-high 17 points, she also pulled down seven rebounds. Nicole Steinburg (Averill Park, N.Y.) and Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) also reached double-figures, scoring 15 and 12 points respectively.
Sophomore Mary Lepore (Manhasset, N.Y.) led the Panthers with her third double double of the season. Lepore scored a career-high 22 points and recovered 11 rebounds, she also picked up five assists. Sophomore Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, December 10 when they play host to Bridgeport at 3:00 pm in Woodruff Hall.
