The Adelphi men's basketball team held Nova Southeastern to just 49 points on 34 percent shooting to pick up a 59-49 road win and run their current win streak to five games. With the win the Panthers improve to 8-3 overall, while the Sharks fall to 6-3.
Nova Southeastern took advantage of a sluggish start by the Panthers to jump out to a quick 9-3 lead just 4:37 into the game. Adelphi woke up and answered with a 12-0 run over the next 1:58 to take a 15-9 advantage.
Adelphi kept the pressure on Nova Southeastern, taking their largest lead of the half, 30-16, on a Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) three-pointer with 3:26 left in the half. But the Sharks would not go into the half quietly, out scoring the Panthers 9-1 over the final three minutes to enter the intermission trailing by six, 31-25.
The Sharks came all the way back early in the second half when they took their first lead since the 14:40 mark of the first half, 32-31, on three Luis Gurrieres free throws with 16:44 to play. Adelphi immediately reclaimed the lead on a Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lay-up, which sparked a 9-0 run, giving the Panthers a 40-32 edge with 12:44 to play.
Nova Southeastern took the lead again with 5:41 remaining on two made foul shots by Traavis Chandler to make it a 47-46 game. Adelphi responded by outscoring the Sharks 13-2 the rest of the way to collect a 59-49 win.
Kevin Chester led Nova Southeastern with 11 points, while teammate Gurrieres chipped in 10 points and pulled down eight caroms.
The Panthers were led by Aaron Cummings (Bay Shore, N.Y.), who scored a game-high 13 points and added four assists, while Blaize was the only other Panther in double figures with 11 points.
