The Adelphi University women's basketball team held Northeast-10 member St. Rose to just 66 points on 36 percent shooting, but scored just 22 points in the second half, falling 66-51 in Albany. With the loss the Panthers fall to 5-6 on the season, while St. Rose's overall record rises to 7-4.
Adelphi took advantage of a slow start by the Golden Knights, jumping out to an eight point lead, 13-5, on an Erin Thames (River Vale, NJ) jumper just 5:24 into the action. The Panthers still held a five point advantage, 17-12, at the 11:27 mark when Mary Lepore (Manhasset, N.Y.) converted a lay-up to push the lead to seven.
St. Rose responded with a 13-5 run over the next 8:14 to take their first lead since making the first basket of the half, 25-24. Adelphi answered right back with a 5-0 run, that included baskets from Thames and Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, NJ) to take a four point lead, 29-25 with 2:17 to play. But the Golden Knights scored the last seven points of the half to enter the locker room with a 32-29 advantage.
The Panthers trailed by as much as five points early in the second half before battling back to knot the game at 36 with 17:41 to play on a Lepore lay-up. But St. Rose held Adelphi scoreless over the next 6:20, while putting up 10 points of their own, to take control of the game at 46-36.
The Golden Knights led by as many as 15 points with 4:48 to play, before the Panthers clawed their way back to within nine at the 3:32 mark, prompting a St. Rose timeout. But it was more of the same as the Golden Knights closed out the game with a 7-1 run to secure a 66-51 win.
Petra Kulhankova (Nova Paka, Czech Republic) led St. Rose with 19 points, eight rebounds and four blocks, while teammate Mary Lewis (Roxbury, MA) pitched in 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.
The Panthers were led by Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.), who scored 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Lepore was the only other player in double figures for Adelphi with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, January 5 when they travel to North Andover, Massachusetts to take on Merrimack at 5:30 pm.
