Men's Basketball Runs Past Assumption, 72-50

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's basketball team outrebounded (23-15) and outshot visiting Assumption from the free throw line (73 percent - 47 percent) in the second half to pick up a 72-59 win against the Greyhounds. With the win the Panthers improve to 7-3 overall, while Assumption drops to 2-6.

Adelphi and Assumption exchanged leads three times over the first six minutes of action, with neither team able to move out to more then a three-point lead. With 13:46 left in the first half, Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer that sparked a 25-11 run that would span the rest of the half and give the Panthers a 33-21 halftime edge.

The Greyhounds showed signs of life in the opening minutes of the second half, cutting Adelphi's lead to 11 with 14:25 left to play and again with 13:51 remaining, 45-34. But, the Panthers used another run to put the game out of reach. Adelphi out scored Assumption 19-8 over the next 8:41 to take a commanding 21 point lead, 64-43.

Leroy Byron (Worcester, MA) led two Greyhounds in double figures with 12 points. Josh Melucci (Cranston, RI) chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

Wagner and teammate Eric Martin both scored 15 points, Martin added a career-high 13 rebounds, while Wagner pulled down five boards and handed out five assists. Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Aaron Cummings (Bay Shore, N.Y.) also reached double digits, scoring 14 and 11 points apiece. 9

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, December 31 when they take on Nova Southeastern at 4:00 pm in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
