Women's Basketball Holds Off Bridgeport, 69-57

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi women's basketball team made 38 trips to the free throw line, while Bridgeport managed just 21 attempts in a 69-57 victory. With the win Adelphi remains unbeaten in the conference at 4-0 and even their overall record at 4-4. With the loss Bridgeport falls to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the NYCAC.

Adelphi took the lead from the tip, building a 9-4 advantage 3:55 into action, getting contributions from four different players. However, the Panthers could not put much distance between themselves and Bridgeport, as the Purple Knights cut Adelphi's lead to just two, 15-13, on two free throws from Cherene Haynes (Memphis, TN).

The Panthers answered with a quick four points before Bridgeport reeled Adelphi back in, knotting the game at 21 with 3:32 to remaining in the first half. Adelphi responded by erupting for 10 points over the final minutes of the half, including seven points from Mary Lepore (Manhasset, N.Y.), to enter the locker room with a comfortable 31-22 edge.

Bridgeport opened the second half by cutting Adelphi's lead to seven on three successive possessions before the Panthers pushed the advantage and moved out to a 20 points lead, 54-34 with 10:01 remaining. The Purple Knights crept back into the game, holding the Panthers without a field goal over an almost eight minute span that lasted until Jordan Gambino hit a lay-up with 1:33 to play to push Adelphi back ahead by 11, 62-51.

Haynes led the Purple Knights with 11 points, nine of which came in the first half. Teammate Angelina Jimenez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) chipped in a double double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.

Lepore led three Panthers in double-figures with 21 points and grabbed six rebounds. Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) added a double double, pouring in 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, while Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) contributed 16 points and six rebounds.

Adelphi returns to action on Monday, December 12 when they play host to Northeast-10 member Pace University at 7:00 pm.
