Adelphi Falls Short Against Bloomfield, 72-65

Bloomfield, NJ - The Adelphi University men's basketball team held host Bloomfield College to just 24 percent shooting in the second half and outscored the Deacons, 41-30, but it was not enough to erase a 41-25 halftime deficit, giving Bloomfield a 72-65 win. With the loss Adelphi falls to 2-2 on the season, while Bloomfield picked up their first win of the season to improve to 1-2.

The opening minutes of play went back and forth, with neither team able to take a clear advantage. But Bloomfield used a 10-4 run to slip out to a 19-12 lead with 11:59 to play in the first half. The Deacons lead grew to double digits, 25-14, on two made free throws by Daniel Terrell with 9:36 remaining.

The Panthers cut the lead down to eight on two occasions, but Bloomfield responded both times with buckets to push the lead back to double-digits. Adelphi entered the locker room down 16, 41-25.

Junior Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) opened the second half with a three-pointer to immediately pull Adelphi within 12, but Bloomfield's Kareem Boswell answered with a jumper to push the margin back to 14.

Adelphi got back-to-back three-pointers from Senior's Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) and Ben Kenyon (Union, NJ) to pull within one point, 43-42 with 13:16 to play. Then senior Eric Martin (Laurelton, N.Y.) converted a lay-to give Adelphi their first lead since the 13:52 mark of the first half.

The Panthers stayed aggressive, pushing their advantage to six points, 54-48, on a made three-pointer from Junior Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) with just 8:16 to play. From there the Deacons went on a 6-0 run to knot the game at 54 with 6:14 remaining.

Bloomfield kept attacking, stringing their lead out to eight points 68-60 with just 1:08 left in the game. Adelphi got as close as four points, 69-65, in the waning second of the game but could not get any closer, falling 72-65.

The difference in the game proved to be free throws, Bloomfield converted 25-33 free throw attempts, while Adelphi went to the line just nine times, making six of those nine attempts.

Terrell led all players with a game-high 28 points, that including going 10-11 from the charity stripe. Boswell was the only other Deacon in double figures with 11 points.

Blaize led the Panthers with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Martin chipped in 12 points on 5-6 shooting.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, November 30 when they travel to Rockville Centre, N.Y. to open up their conference schedule against Molloy College at 7:30 pm.
