The Adelphi women's basketball team placed four players in double figures and held Stonehill to just 33 percent shooting in the first half to enter the break with a 32-28 lead. But the Panthers went cold in the second half, converting just 26 percent of their shots to drop their third straight game 69-54. With the loss Adelphi falls to 0-3 on the season, while Stonehill improves to 3-0 overall.
Adelphi was rolling early as the Panthers built a seven point lead, 9-2, just 4:40 into play. Stonehill cut the margin to four on a Kelsey Simond's jumper with 12:16 to play. But senior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) responded with two quick buckets to push the Panther advantage to eight, 17-9.
The Panthers kept the pressure on, moving out to an 11 point lead, 24-13, on another Hurdle basket with 8:03 remaining. Stonehill battled back again, knocking Adelphi's lead down to just two with 4:25 to play, but the Panthers outscored Stonehill 6-2 over the last four minutes of action to enter the half with a 32-28 edge.
Adelphi clung to their four-point lead as the second half opened. The Panthers fought off three ties before finally falling behind by two, 40-38, with 14:43 left in the game. From there it was all Stonehill, as the Panthers were outscored 25-0 over the next nine minutes of play and found themselves trailing 65-38.
Adelphi outscored Stonehill 16-4 over the remaining 5:17 to pull within 15, 69-54, as the horn sounded.
Bethany Tighe led Stonehill with 13 points and eight rebounds. Erika Stupinski and Alisha Collins chipped in 12 points and 10 points respectively.
SophomoreGianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) led four Panthers in double figures with her first double-double of the season, 13 points and 10 boards. Hurdle, sophomore Jordan Gambino (Staten Island, N.Y.) and junior Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, NJ) added 10 points apiece.
Adelphi returns to action on November 30 when they open their conference schedule at Molloy College.
