Oct. 22, 2005

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - Sophomore Rob Philippou (Manhasset, N.Y.) led an explosive Panther attack with two goals and an assist, helping Adelphi to a 4-1 Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) win over visiting Longwood University on Homecoming. With the win Adelphi improves to 3-11-1 overall and 1-2 in the ASC, while Longwood falls to 3-10-2 on the season and 1-2-1 in conference action.

Adelphi opened the scoring in just the 6th minute of play when Philippou tracked down a ball in the left corner, collected it and then sent the ball toward the Lancer goal. Junior Dieudonne Nonga (Douala, Cameroon) got a foot on the ball, volleying it off a Longwood defender and into the goal.

The Panthers took a 2-0 advantage in the 21st minute of play when junior Ron Forman (Massapequa, N.Y.) collected a loose ball inside the Longwood box and found the back of the Lancer net from 13 yards out.

Adelphi tacked on one more before the half when an Adelphi player sent a driven ball into the Longwood end. Lancer goalkeeper Brandt Youmans (Gaithersburg, MD) ventured out of the net to make a play on the ball at the top of the box, but Philippou beat Youmans to the ball, touching over the head of Youmans. Philippou slipped around Youmans, and then sent the ball into an empty net, giving Adelphi a 3-0 lead.

Philippou struck again in the 58th minute when he found himself all alone with the ball 22 yards from goal. Philippou ripped a shot that found the top left corner of the Lancer net, giving Adelphi a comfortable 4-0 lead.

Longwood ended Adelphi goalkeeper Michael Hurley's (Freeport, N.Y.) shut out bid in the 60th minute when Adam Kotchin (North Hanover, NJ) chipped the ball over the Panther defense for Todd Runey (Midlothian, VA). Runey ran onto the ball, finding himself alone behind the Adelphi defense and slipped the ball past Hurley.

Youmans combined with Tyler Marsh (Mechanicsville, VA) to collect one save, while Hurley picked up two saves and the win.

Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, October 25 when they play host to ASC rival Philadelphia University at 3:00 pm on Stiles Field.
