The Adelphi men's soccer team opened Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) play at Oneonta State on Saturday, October 1. The Panthers were down 2-0 at the half but battled back to pull within one goal midway through the second half, but could not complete the comeback, falling 2-1. With the loss Adelphi falls to 1-8-1 on the season and 0-1 in the ASC, while Oneonta State improves to 4-5-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
In a first half that saw 11 combined shots the Red Dragons found the back of the net twice, just 4:15 apart. Daniel Stevens (Liverpool, N.Y.) sent a cross into the Panther box from the left flank, where Billy Ohrin (Castleton, N.Y.) collected the ball and slotted it past Adelphi goalkeeper Michael Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.), giving Oneonta a 1-0 lead.
Oneonta scored their second goal in the 37th minute when Keith Manscuk (Rochester, N.Y.) received the ball from Jonathan Garcia-Torres (Brentwood, N.Y.) and beat Hurley to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 edge at the half.
The Panthers cut Oneonta's lead in half in the 66th minute when Matt Smith collected a loose ball and found the back of the Red Dragon goal, beating Timothy Melia (Great River, N.Y.) for his second goal of the season.
Hurley collected four saves in the loss, while Melia picked three saves and the win.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, October 5 when they travel to Hamden, Connecticut to take on Quinnipiac at 3:00 pm.
