Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi women's soccer team out shot visiting C.W. Post 8-5 in the second half of action, including a penalty shot, but could not find the back of the net, falling 1-0. With the loss the Panthers fall to 6-3-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play, while the Pioneers improve to 10-3-1 overall and 7-1 in the NYCAC.

Adelphi jumped on C.W. Post in the early going, registering a quick shot on goal, but as time ticked down the momentum switched and the Pioneers launched an attack. Unfortunately neither team could gain a solid advantage and entered the half tied at zero.

Action heated up in the second half, finally boiling over when the Pioneers sent a long ball into the Adelphi end. As the ball moved toward the Panther penalty box goalkeeper Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) came out to meet the ball. At the same instant a Panther defender also moved toward the ball, blocking Conway, the ball was deflected to a waiting Denise Domena (Brentwood, N.Y.) who slipped the ball into the empty net, to put C.W. Post ahead 1-0 with 33:47 left in the half.

The Panthers had their best opportunity to even the score with 25:56 on the clock. A Pioneer defender misplayed a ball in the C.W. Post penalty box, resulting in a hand ball and an Adelphi penalty kick. Lea Brady (Holbrook, N.Y.) approached the spot to take the penalty kick, Brady sent the ball to the left side of the goal, waist height. Pioneer goalkeeper Kim Yacenda (Greenlawn, N.Y.) guessed right and was waiting, making the save and preserving the 1-0 lead.

Just minutes later Catherine Wyndham (Lynbrook, N.Y.) took a direct kick from 25 yards that glanced off the crossbar. The Panthers really put the pressure on in the last 10 minutes of play, but could not find the back of the net, falling 1-0.

Yacenda collected six saves and the shut out, while Conway picked up four saves.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, October 22 when they play host to Bloomsburg at 2:00 pm on Stiles Field.
