Garden City, N.Y. -
Senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) registered a season best 26 points and collected her 1000th career point in the process as the Adelphi University women's basketball team topped Mercy College, 96-72, Wednesday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers improve to 10-7 and 9-5 in the NYCAC.
The Panthers had four players in double figures, with three of their starters accounting for 64 of the team's points.
Senior Meranne Whitney (Nashua, N.H.) poured in 20 of her 24 points in the first half. She was 8-of-9 from the field, helping the Panthers shoot a sizzling 59.0 percent from the field. Junior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) had a solid first half, contributing 10 of her 14 points. Not to be outdone, senior Tamarra Richardson (Brockton, Mass.) chipped in with seven of her career-best 11 points in the opening stanza as well.
The Lady Flyers stepped up play in the second half, outscoring the Panthers 42-41, but the night belonged to Mangone. She collected 17 points in the half, including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Needing just one point to break 1000, Mangone banked the final basket with four seconds remaining as the Panthers cruised to a 96-72 victory.
The Panthers capitalized on 27 Mercy turnovers, converting this to 36 points in the contest. However, the Lady Flyers dominated the boards, outrebounding Adelphi 51-35.
Mercy College (0-15, 0-14 NYCAC) was led by junior Nicole Steinburg (Averill Park, N.Y.) with 22 points.
Mangone's 26 point effort was just one shy of her career best and she becomes the 15th Adelphi player to reach 1000 points plateau. Her career total stands at 1001 and counting.
The Panthers are back in action this Saturday, January 29, as they travel to Southampton College for a 1:30 p.m. tip-off. The Clippers topped Adelphi, 67-60, in their last meeting on January 8, 2005.
