Men's Basketball Outlasts Mercy, 66-60

Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi scored 26 points off of Mercy turnovers and got a dunk from senior James Samuels (Uniondale, N.Y.) in the closing seconds to seal a 66-60 win over the Flyers. With the win Adelphi remains unbeaten in the last nine, posting a record of 14-3 overall and remain on top of the NYCAC with a mark of 13-1. Mercy falls to 6-9 overall and 6-7 in conference action with the loss.

Adelphi and Mercy both struggled to find their shot in the early going, combing for 10 points in the first seven minutes of action. Adelphi used a 9-4 run to take a five point lead, 15-10 with 9:18 remaining. Mercy's Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, N.Y.) responded by scoring the next six points to give the Flyers a 16-15 edge.

Adelphi and Mercy exchanged leads before Kris Laurenceau (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer to the Flyers ahead 28-25 with 1:29 to play. Sophomore Mike Mosby (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) converted one of two free throws, pulling Adelphi to within two before sophomore Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a long three-pointer as time expired, giving the Panthers a 29-28 halftime advantage.

The second half opened with Mercy and Adelphi trading baskets. The Panthers remained in control extending their lead to five or more on eight occasions. But with just 26 seconds to play the Flyers drew to within three points on a jumper by Laurenceau. Samuels responded by converting two free throws to push the lead back to five, 63-58, with 24 seconds on the clock.

Mercy would not go quietly as Wellington sank two free throws to cut the lead to three again. Sophomore Samuel Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted one of two attempts from the line to push the lead back to four and secure the win.

Junior Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) led the way for Adelphi with 16 points and five rebounds. Samuels and junior Eric Martin (Laurelton, N.Y.) were the only other Panthers in double figures. Samuels chipped in 15 points and six rebounds, while Martin scored 14 points and grabbed eight boards.

Wellington paced the Flyers with 17 points and six rebounds. Laurenceau and Kevin Green (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each scored 12 points in the loss.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 29, when they travel to Southampton to take on LIU-Southampton at 3:30 pm.
