Adelphi Women Roll Past Queens, 84-71

Garden City, N.Y. - Junior Carlyshia Hurdle (Hempstead, N.Y.) poured in 21 of her career-high 27 points in the second half along with 14 boards to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 84-71 victory over Queens College on Monday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers improve to 9-7 overall and 8-5 in the NYCAC while the Knights drop to 6-8 and 6-7 in conference play.

Freshman Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) also had a stellar night, recording her first double-double with a career-best 20 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) was also in double figures with 15 points, five steals and three assists.

Adelphi opened on a 13-6 run over the first five minutes of play helped by Smith who was 5-for-10 from the field in the first half. Queens rallied on a 6-0 run capped by a jumper by junior Patti Cronin (East Islip, N.Y.) to close the gap to one, 13-12, at 11:14. A three-pointer by senior Tamarra Richardson (Brockton, Mass.) sparked a 17-5 Panther run which ballooned to a 13 point lead with 5:53 remaining. The Knights were 10-of-16 from the foul line, compared to 8-for-8 for the Panthers. The difference was in rebounds, as Adelphi held a 28-20 advantage.

The Panthers continued its strong play in the second half, shooting a sizzling 54.3 percent from the field. The Knights were unable to mount a consistent rally, never coming closer than six points. Adelphi's defense was strong, pulling down 30 rebounds compared to just 15 for Queens in the second half. On the night, the Panthers were 43.6 percent from the field, their second best shooting percentage of the season.

Junior Erin White (Flushing, N.Y.) led a balanced Queens attack with 20 points. Senior Shonda Holder (Uniondale, N.Y.) added 17 points and six rebounds.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, January 26, hosting Mercy College at 5:30 p.m.
