The Adelphi men's basketball team held host Bridgeport to just 17 points on 24 percent shooting in the second half to pick up a hard fought 59-51 road win. With the win Adelphi remains atop the NYCAC at 11-1 and extends their win streak to seven games, giving the Panthers a 12-3 overall record, while Bridgeport falls to 11-4 overall and 9-3 in the conference.
Adelphi and Bridgeport traded baskets early and were knotted at eight apiece with 15:50 to play in the first half. Then Kevin Jeffreys (Bridgeport, CT) sank two free throws to put the Purple Knights up two and spark a 12-2 run that gave Bridgeport a 20-10 edge with 12:48 to play.
The Panthers cut the lead to five, 26-21 on a jumper by Samuel Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y.), but Bridgeport's Terence Wilkins (Brooklyn, N.Y.) responded with two made free throws to push the lead back to seven. Adelphi's James Samuel's (Uniondale, N.Y.) sank two free throws with six seconds left in the half to send the Panthers into the locker room down just six, 34-28.
Adelphi opened up the second half by turning up the defensive pressure holding the Purple Knights to just 10 points in the first 17:50 of the second half. During that span the Panthers scored 23 points of their own to claim a five point lead, 51-46 with 2:10 to play. Bridgeport cut the lead to four on a deep three pointer by Mark Price (Buffalo, N.Y.) but Adelphi made 8-10 free throw attempts over the last two minutes to seal the win.
Samuels led the Panthers with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while teammate Aaron Cummings (Bay Shore, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points and five rebounds.
Ramel Allen (Bronx, N.Y.) finished one point shy of a triple-double, scoring nine points, grabbing 18 boards and blocking 10 shots. Jeffreys was the only player in double-figures for the Purple Knights with 10 points.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday January 22nd when they play host to visiting Queens College at 5:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
