The Adelphi University women's basketball team was unable to climb out of an 28-40 half-time deficit, falling to the University of Bridgeport, 68-59, on Thursday night at Bruce Webster Court. The Panthers drop to 8-7 on the season and 7-5 in the NYCAC.
Junior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) led three Adelphi players in double figures with 14 points and eight rebounds. Senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) collected 13 points while sophomore Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, N.J.) had 10 points.
The Panthers led 4-3 in the opening minutes of play before the Purple Knights rallied on a 21-5 run to lead 24-9 at 11:06. Adelphi struggled from the field, hitting just 10-of-34. UB led by as much as 19 points with 6:50 remaining and held a 40-28 advantage at intermission.
In the second half, Adelphi began to chip away at the Bridgeport lead. Hurdle contributed 10 points in the half, including two made free throws which brought the Panthers to within four points,50-54, with 7:21 left to play. A three-pointer by Mangone at 3:07 kept the Panthers close, but that would prove to be the last field goal for Adelphi as UB pulled away for the win, 68-59.
Bridgeport's Krista Ross led all players with 19 points while pulling down 16 rebounds.
Next up, Adelphi returns home to host Queens College on Saturday, January 22, at 5:30 p.m.
