The Adelphi University women's basketball team used C.W. Post to snap a six-game slump, posting a 67-55 victory at the Pratt Center on Tuesday night. The Panthers improve to 8-6 on the season and 7-4 in the NYCAC. The Pioneers drop to 2-12 and 2-9 in the conference.
Junior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) scored 11 of her team-high 17 points in the second half along with 11 boards. Senior Meranne Whitney (Nashua, N.H.) collected 15 points while senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Adelphi came out strong, opening on a 9-4 run in the first 4:30 of the game. Senior Tamarra Richardson (Brockton, MA) scored all eight of her points in the first half. The Pioneers rallied scoring the next six straight to take the lead on a basket plus one from freshman Basimah Thompson (Galloway, N.J.). After trading baskets, the Panthers opened up an 25-20 lead capped by a layup from freshman Jordan Gambino (Staten Island, N.Y.) with 3:24 remaining. Post outscored the Panthers 5-2 to knot the score for the fifth time, 27-27. Two made free throws by Mangone gave Adelphi a 29-27 lead at the end of the first half.
Senior Courtney Carpenter scored six of her nine points in the first five minutes of the second half to help the Panthers to a 44-35 lead at 14:48. The Pioneers answered on a 6-0 run to close to within three with 12:04 left to play. This would prove to be the closest they would come. Whitney registered 13 points in the half, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc as Adelphi led 63-53 with 1:58 in regulation.
C.W. Post was led by senior Thalia Jackson (Baldwin, N.Y.) with a game-high 20 points along with seven rebounds and five assists.
The win ends a six-game drought for the Panthers, their longest since the 1997-98 season. Adelphi swept its series with C.W. Post this season and have not lost to the Pioneers since December 3, 2002.
Next up, the Panthers travel to the University of Bridgeport on Thursday, January 20. Tip-off is at 5:00 p.m.
