The Adelphi University women's basketball team continues to struggle, dropping its fifth straight contest, 74-63, at Philadelphia University on Thursday night. The Lady Rams improve to 7-8 on the season and 5-4 in the NYCAC, while the Panthers drop to 7-5 and 6-3 in the NYCAC.
Adelphi was led by senior Meranne Whitney (Nashua, N.H.) with 19 points. Junior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) was the only other Panther in double figures with 14 points along with six boards.
PhilaU controlled the first half, shooting 53.6 percent from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. Senior Samara Speakes poured in 18 of her game-high 28 points in the first half as the Lady Rams held a 45-31 lead at intermission.
Adelphi's defense stepped it up in the second half, as the Lady Rams shooting percentage tumbled to just 25.9 percent. The Panthers closed the gap, tying the game, 60-60, with five minutes remaining. But PhilaU rallied back closing on a 14-3 run for the win. The difference was at the foul line as PhilaU hit 14-of-18 compared with only 3-of-5 for Adelphi.
After a 7-0 start, Adelphi has lost its last five contests. The last time the Panthers lost five or more consecutive games was during the 1996-97 season when the team finished 7-20.
Adelphi returns to action this Saturday, January 15, hosting Molly College at 5:30 p.m.
