The Adelphi University volleyball team picked up its first win of the 2004 season, defeating Nyack College 30-16-30-15,30-15, in its home opener on Tuesday night. The Panthers improve to 1-3 overall while the Warriors drop to 0-2.
Sophomore Rachael Cornick led a balanced Panther attack with seven kills and eight digs. Sophomore Kelly Campbell and freshmen Lauren Flanagan chipped in six kills apiece.
The Panthers jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in game one and never looked back. The Warriors were never able to sustain more than three consecutive points as Adelphi cruised to a 30-16 win.
Game two was much of the same with the Panthers' hitting percentage improving to 29 percent. Sophomore Deanna Maggio served for six straight points, totaling three service aces in the contest. Nyack could not seem to find a consistent rhythm as Adelphi coasted to a 30-15 finish.
The Warriors rallied back in game three, leading early, 4-3. Both teams traded point for point before Adelphi, leading 9-8, rattled off four unanswered points. The Panthers continued to pull away. Junior Jessica Haynes, who had two service aces in the match, served on a 6-0 Adelphi rally late in the contest en route to a 30-15 victory.
Nyack was led by senior Christina Labocki with eight kills and five digs.
The Panthers return to action this weekend as they head to the Kutztown Invitational this Friday and Saturday, September 10-11.
