Senior forward Josephine Coiro (West Babylon, N.Y.) scored twice to lead the No. 20 Adelphi University women's soccer team to a 4-1 conference win over Queens College on Wednesday afternoon at Stiles Field. The Panthers (5-1, 2-0 NYCAC) improve their win streak to five, while handing the Lady Knights (3-1, 1-1 NYCAC) their first loss of the season.
Coiro scored her first goal unassisted in the sixth minute of play to give the Panthers an early lead. Sophomore Lea Brady (Holbrook, N.Y.) notched her third goal of the season at 34:43 on an assist from junior Shannon McEntee (Valley Stream, N.Y.). Just under six minutes later on a break away, sophomore Tara Grodotzke (Rocky Point, N.Y.) raced past Queens goalie Lauren Usewicz (Williston Park, N.Y.) to give Adelphi a 3-0 advantage going into intermission.
The Lady Knights got on board in the second half after a free kick was awarded on a goalie error. Sophomore Christine Lettieri's (Beechhurst, N.Y.) shot sailed over freshman goalkeeper Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and into the back of the net. Coiro closed out the scoring in the 72nd minute on a cross from Brady to give the Panthers a 4-1 win.
The Panthers outshot the Lady Knights 16-6 and held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Adelphi begins a three-game conference road trip this Saturday, September 25, at the University of New Haven. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
