Volleyball Topples C.W. Post, 3-0

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team topped conference rival C.W. Post, 30-26, 30-22, 33-31 on Tuesday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers improve to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the NYCAC while the Pioneers drop to 2-5 and 0-1 in the conference.

Junior Jessica Haynes led a balanced Panther attack with nine kills and eight digs. Junior Meaghan Joyce chipped in eight kills and eight digs. Sophomore Brittany Addeo dished out 23 assists along with nine digs.

The Pioneers opened game one on a 4-0 run before the Panthers jumped on board. After trading points, Adelphi hit a groove off the serving efforts of senior libero Sharon Ribera to lead 13-9. The Panthers held a comfortable 27-16 lead before a late Pioneer rally closed the gap to 26-28. The Panthers held on for the win, 30-26.

In game two, Adelphi quickly jumped out to an early lead. The Panthers led by as much as 11 points, 26-14, late into the game. The Pioneers were unable to sustain a consistent rally, as Adelphi cruised to a 30-22 win.

A determined Post team came back strong in game three keeping the game close. The Pioneers took advantage of an Adelphi error to realize their first lead of the night, 12-11. The game remained close until Post managed to open up a four point lead, 28-24. The Panthers surged back tying the game at 30-30 off of a kill by Haynes. Sophomore Deanna Maggio provided the final point, hitting one of her six service aces of the night to win the game, 33-31.

The Pioneers were led by junior Lauren Dunne with 17 kills. Senior Cinthia Serowick had 11 kills.

Tonight marked the first win for Adelphi over C.W. Post since November 8, 1997, when the Panthers defeated the Pioneers 3-0 in the first round of the NYCAC Tournament. The Pioneers still hold a 3-12 all-time series advantage over the Panthers.

Adelphi returns to conference action this Thursday, September 16, hosting the University of Bridgeport at 7:00 p.m.
