Adelphi traveled to Kutztown, Pennsylvania over the weekend to participate in the Kutztown Invitational. The Panthers took on host, Kutztown University, conference foe NYIT in a non-conference match-up and Northeast-10 representative St. Rose. Adelphi hung tough in all three matches and came away from the weekend with a record of 2-5 overall.
The Panthers opened the Invitational on Friday, taking on host Kutztown. Kutztown took the first two games 30-18 and 30-22. But Adelphi would not quit, taking the third game 32-30. The Panthers continued to battle in the fourth game but ultimately fell by a score of 30-28 to drop the match 3 games to 1.
Junior Meaghan Joyce (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Panthers with a career high 17 kills and ten digs, while senior Sharon Ribera (Hollis Hills, N.Y.) collected a team and career high 19 digs.
Adelphi opened the second-day of the Invitational against the College of St. Rose. The Panthers claimed a hard fought first game 35-33, then came back to roll in the second game 30-17. Adelphi closed out the match in the third game by topping St. Rose 30-27 to pick-up a 3-0 victory.
Junior Jessica Haynes (Tampa, FL) paced the Panthers with nine kills, 11 digs and three service aces. While Ribera picked up 12 digs and Brittany Addeo (Minden, NV) collected 29 sets to go with the 45 she claimed against Kutztown.
The Panthers closed out the Invitational by taking on NYIT in a non-conference meeting. Adelphi came out strong, taking a 1-0 advantage with a 30-27 win in the first game. But NYIT stormed back, taking the next three games 30-22, 30-20 and 30-17 to pick up a three games to one win. With the victory NYIT advanced to the finals, defeating host Kutztown for the Kutztown Invitational title.
Joyce again led the Panthers in kills with 11 and Ribera paced Adelphi in digs, with 13, for the third consecutive game. Freshman Christina Vandling, who totaled 20 kills and six blocks over the three matches, was named to the All-Tournament team.
Adelphi returns to action on September 14th when they open their conference schedule by playing host to visiting C.W. Post at 7:00 pm in Woodruff Hall.
