Box Score
New Rochelle, N.Y. -
Senior midfielder David Kinneman (Lansdale, PA) scored three goals in the second period to lead the NSCAA NY Region #10 Iona College men's soccer team to a thrilling, 4-3, victory over #9 Adelphi this afternoon at Mazzella Field. The two teams combined for 11 yellow cards as the seven goals in the game was a stark contrast from the, 0-0, double-overtime tie in Garden City last season.
The Panthers (1-2-0) scored the game's first two goals to take a 2-0 lead in the 24th minute. Despite a significant edge in shot attempts by the Gaels (2-1-0), Adelphi was able to get on the scoreboard twice. Tal Sheinfeld (Even Yehoda, Israel) got the Panthers on the scoreboard at the 15:30 mark deflecting a shot attempt by teammate Kari Arnason (Reykjavik, Iceland) past Iona netminder Patrick McAllen (Washingtonville, NY). Iona handed Adelphi its second goal of the game at the 24:17 mark when a defenseman was unable to control a lose ball and scored on his own net.
After numerous missed opportunities, rookie forward Chris Butler (Paramus, NJ) finally broke through Adelphi's Peter Ruff (Bethpage, N.Y.) at the 33:13 mark. Fresh off the bench, fellow rookie Brian Nash (Bridgewater, NJ) chipped an on-side pass over the defense to Butler who beat Ruff one-on-one for his first collegiate goal. The Gaels took a 14-8 shot attempt advantage into the half.
The second half was all Kinneman. His first goal came at the 61:30 mark and tied the score at two a piece. After an Adelphi foul, sophomore Paul Racines (Brooklyn, NY) tipped the free kick to Kinneman who one-timed a goal into the top right corner of the goal from 40-yards out. He gave the Gaels a 3-2 advantage a little over fifteen minutes later, taking a Sebastian Garcia-Lopez (Flushing, NY) pass on the right side and depositing it into the opposite corner of the goal from nearly 20-yards out at the 78:48 mark.
The Panthers knotted the score at 3-3 just over a minute later and it looked as if it would be a fight to the finish. Steven Heisler (Deer Park, N.Y.) squeaked through the defense after receiving a pass from Sheinfeld and beat McAllen one-on-one. But, Kinneman continued his career day taking a hard cross from Racines and one-timing it from six yards out for the eventual game winner.
McAllen stopped four shots while his counterpart Ruff made seven saves. Iona outshot Adelphi, 22-16.
The Panthers return to action on September 18th when they play host to visiting St. Francis at 1:00 pm on Stiles Field.
