Sept. 1, 2004

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - Lauren Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) scored 5:07 into overtime to give No. 5 Adelphi University a 3-2 women's soccer win over American International College Wednesday afternoon at AIC Park. The Panthers evened their record at 1-1-0 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets open their season at 0-1-0.

The Panthers, who reached the NCAA Division II quarterfinals last season, found themselves down 2-1 11:29 into the second half when AIC's Stacey Italiano (Lake Grove, N.Y.) headed a feed from Lindsey Wolfe (Westfield, Mass.) to give the Jackets the lead.

Adelphi would tie the game with 2:38 to play. AU's Catherine Wyndham (Lynbrook, N.Y.) collected a ball at the top of the box and fired a laser from 20 yards that beat Yellow Jacket keeper Sara Hyde (Winter Haven, Fla.) to tie the score at 2-all. After the teams played to a draw over the final minutes, Lopez gave Adelphi the win at the 95:07 mark when she headed a ball inside the right post from six yards out off an assist from Kelli Schmidt (Glendale, AZ).

AIC took a 1-0 lead just 8:15 into the contest. Freshman Joanne Germano (West Springfield, Mass.) fired a shot from the top of the box to beat AU's Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) for the former Springfield Cathedral standout's first collegiate goal. The Panthers would respond 8:07 later when Lea Brady (Holbrook, N.Y.) beat Hyde one-on-one after taking a header from Josephine Coiro (West Babylon, N.Y.).

Conway recorded two saves in goal for the Panthers, while Hyde turned away 11 shots for AIC. Adelphi generated a 24-7 advantage in shot attempts for the game.

Adelphi returns to action Sunday when it travels to Bloomsburg University for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
