Lauren Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) scored 5:07 into
overtime to give No. 5 Adelphi University a 3-2 women's soccer win over
American International College Wednesday afternoon at AIC Park. The
Panthers evened their record at 1-1-0 on the season, while the Yellow
Jackets open their season at 0-1-0.
The Panthers, who reached the NCAA Division II quarterfinals last season,
found themselves down 2-1 11:29 into the second half when AIC's Stacey
Italiano (Lake Grove, N.Y.) headed a feed from Lindsey Wolfe (Westfield,
Mass.) to give the Jackets the lead.
Adelphi would tie the game with 2:38 to play. AU's Catherine Wyndham
(Lynbrook, N.Y.) collected a ball at the top of the box and fired a laser
from 20 yards that beat Yellow Jacket keeper Sara Hyde (Winter Haven, Fla.)
to tie the score at 2-all. After the teams played to a draw over the final
minutes, Lopez gave Adelphi the win at the 95:07 mark when she headed a ball
inside the right post from six yards out off an assist from Kelli Schmidt (Glendale, AZ).
AIC took a 1-0 lead just 8:15 into the contest. Freshman Joanne Germano
(West Springfield, Mass.) fired a shot from the top of the box to beat AU's
Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) for the former Springfield
Cathedral standout's first collegiate goal. The Panthers would respond 8:07
later when Lea Brady (Holbrook, N.Y.) beat Hyde one-on-one after taking a
header from Josephine Coiro (West Babylon, N.Y.).
Conway recorded two saves in goal for the Panthers, while Hyde turned away 11 shots for AIC. Adelphi generated a 24-7 advantage in shot attempts for
the game.
Adelphi returns to action Sunday when it travels to Bloomsburg University for a 1:00 p.m.
contest.
