Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's soccer team suffered a tough 2-0 loss at the hands of Southern Connecticut State University in its season home opener this Sunday afternoon at Stiles Field. The Panthers fall to 0-1 while the Owls improve to 1-0. SCSU came out strong, scoring in the second minute of play. Sophomore Beth Ganley's (Holbrook, N.Y.) foul kick sailed over the hands of freshman Adelphi goalie Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) as senior Sarah Martikainen (Trumbull, Conn.) tapped the ball into the net. The battle remained in midfield for the remainder of the first half with neither team producing another shot on goal. The second half proved to more of the same as the Panthers struggled to gain the advantage. Adelphi had several key opportunities including back-to-back shots by sophomore Lea Brady (Holbrook, N.Y.) which were both deflected by the SCSU goalie Alana Bouley (Attleboro, Mass.). Bouley totaled six saves on the day. The Owls sealed the victory in the 72nd minute on an unassisted goal by junior Christina DelBuono (Wolcott, Conn.). Adelphi now trails 0-2 in its all-time series record against the SCSU. Last season the Owls topped the Panthers, 1-0. This is the first shutout for the Panthers since their last meeting with SCSU on August 29, 2003. It also marks the first two-point margin loss since October 19, 2002 at Lock Haven University. Next up, Adelphi begins a three-game road trip with its first stop at American International on Wednesday, September 1 at 3:00 p.m.
