Windischmann Elected to National Soccer Hall of Fame

Garden City, N.Y. - Mike Windischmann, a former soccer standout at Adelphi University from 1983-86, will be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame by its veterans committee. This announced today in the New York Daily News.

Windischmann was a defender and captain of the U.S. team that reached the World Cup for the first time in 40 years in 1990. He will be inducted with WC teammate Paul Caligiuri, U.S. men's all-time leading scorer Eric Wynalda and former women's standout Michelle Akers. Induction ceremonies are in Oneonta, NY on October 11.

While at Adelphi, he played both midfield and sweeper and was a two-time All-American and a four-time All-New York selection. He was inducted into the Adelphi Hall of Fame in 1994.

In 1983, Windischmann was a member of the U.S. Team in the World University Games in Kobe, Japan and participated in both the 1985 (Bronze Medal Team) and the 1986 (Gold Medal Team) National Sports Festivals. In 1986, he again participated in the World University Games in Yugoslavia.

Windischmann captained the 1988 U.S. Olympic team, scoring a goal versus Argentina in the Seoul games. In 1990, he was named captain of the U.S. World Cup team which participated in Italy. In both 1990 and 1993, he played on the U.S. team which won bronze and silver medals, respectively, in indoor tournaments.

He has played 56 games for the U.S. National Team and was a four-year captain for the squad. In 1989, he was named the U.S. National Team Player of the Year.

Windischmann teaches at Public School 118 in Hollis and is technical director and director of coaching with the Brooklyn Knights, a youth and amateur soccer club.
