Adelphi's ninth inning rally netted them three runs, but the Panthers gave up three runs to Dowling in the bottom of the ninth to fall 7-6. The loss is the second time in less then two weeks that Adelphi has had Dowling down to their last three outs only to see a win slip away. With the loss Adelphi ends the regular season with a record of 19-21 overall and 10-10 in conference play.
Dowling struck first, scoring in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth Thomas Cali (Shirley, N.Y.) singled and then advanced to second on a error, Cali would score on another Dowling error to knot the game at one.
In the bottom of the fourth Dowling picked up two runs on an RBI single and a fielder's choice to take a 3-1 lead. The Panthers picked up another run in the top of the fifth when they loaded the bases with three consecutive singles. Pat O'Neill (Oakville, CT) would eventually score on a wild pitch to pull Adelphi within 3-2.
In the seventh Dowling and Adelphi exchanged runs, making the score 4-3 heading in to the ninth inning. In the top of the ninth Roger Mischel (Whitestone, N.Y.) flied out, but he scored Frank Alesia (Valley Stream, N.Y.) to pull Adelphi even at 4-4. Then Casey Twibell (Carle Place, N.Y.) and Matt DeWitt (North Bellmore, N.Y.) scored on an error to give the Panthers their first lead of the game, 6-4.
Andrew Tinucci (Bellmore, N.Y.) came in to close out the game in the bottom of the ninth. Dowling picked up two hits and scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to steal the game, 7-6.
Adelphi will return to action on Wednesday, May 5th when they take on sixth seeded New Haven in the first round of the NYCAC Tournament. It is the Panthers first trip to the post-season since 2002; game time is 3:00 pm at the University of New Haven.
