Adelphi Rolls Past Mercy, 18-13

Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi scored 18 runs on 15 hits, including seven runs in the third innings to roll to a win over Mercy 18-13. The Panthers almost gave the game away, giving up eight runs in the top of the eighth, but Chris Widmer (Valley Stream, N.Y.) gave up just one run and one hit over the last inning and a half to give Adelphi the win. With the win the Panthers even their conference mark at 7-7 and improve to 16-17 overall, Mercy falls to 4-21 overall and 2-10 in the NYCAC.

Adelphi started the game strong, jumping out to a 2-0 lead after one inning and extending their lead to 3-0 after two. In the top of the third Mercy clawed back into the game and pulled to within one run, 3-2. But the Panthers exploded in the bottom of the third for seven runs, pushing their advantage to 10-2.

Mercy climbed back into the game, scoring eight runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it an 18-12 game. But Adelphi closed the door in the ninth with pitching and defense to come away with an 18-13 win.

Roger Mischel (Whitestone, N.Y.) pitched seven innings of four hit ball to pick up the win. Frank Alesia (Valley Stream, N.Y.) had a big day at the plate for the Panthers, going 4-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, April 25th when they travel to C.W. Post for a noon conference showdown.
